The Cure for Depression from the Qur’an

Here, Sheikh Hamzah Tzotzis reflects on a verse from Surat Yusuf (the 12th Chapter of the Qur’an and it narrates the story of Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him) to show us how could we find the cure for grief and depression in the Qur’an.

Sheikh Hamzah begins his talk by focusing the attention on the importance of reflecting upon the Qur’an. The Qur’an itself invites us in many verses to reflect upon it. Almighty Allah says:

Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? (An-Nisaa’ 4:82)

This is a clear invitation for us to reflect and extract the gems from the Qur’an to receive Allah’s mercy and love. Each Muslim should ask himself, how am I supposed to live and act in this world? Allah, the Lord of everything, calls us to truly engage with his eternal word. In such way, we will find solutions for all the problems of our life.

Then Sheikh Hamzah gives us an example, a verse from Surat Yusuf then he reflects upon it. That verse is,

He said, “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah , and I know from Allah that which you do not know. (Yusuf 12:86)

Jacob (peace be upon him), the father of Joseph (peace be upon him), teaches us how to deal with grief, distress, and depression as Jacob was in a genuine grief because his beloved sons Joseph and Benjamin were lost. But look what he said, “I complain to Allah|”.

After that Sheikh Hamzah extracts the most beneficial lessons from this incident.
