Why Did `Uthman Burn the Qur’an?

The Islamic country expanded at the time of the great Caliph `Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and many non-Arabs embraced Islam. Also, Arab-Muslims began to dispute on the sound pronunciation of the words of the Qur’an. `Uthman gave orders to write a master copy of the Qur’an -upon which all the companions agreed-, send it to all Islamic territories and burn all other copies. The aim of doing so was to avoid the disputes and clashes that broke out between Muslims and to preserve the Qur’an from being affected by the non-Arab tongues.

The current copy of the Qur’an is the same as that which was written at the time of `Uthman and got consensus agreement of companions and memorizers of the Qur’an at his time. May Allah reward `Uthman all the good for his contributions in preserving the Noble Qur’an!

In this talk, Sheikh Yasir Qadhi clarifies this cultural misunderstanding and the issue of burning the copies of the Qur’an during the era of caliph `Uthman.
