Here is a new great series composed of 40 short videos that cover the prophetic traditions pertaining to the virtues and rulings of the Qur’an. This episode sheds some light on the following hadith:

Ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Envy is justified in regard to two types of persons only: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur’an, and so he recites it during the night and during the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and so he spends from it during the night and during the day.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The common meaning of hasad (envy) is that when one wishes the deprivation of a blessing, talent, or possession that another one has. This kind of malicious envy is prohibited because it wipes out one’s good deeds.

There is another kind of envy which is favored by the Prophet (peace be upon him) when one wishes to enjoy things which others have such as wealth and knowledge, without wishing that they should be deprived of them to your exclusive benefit. This kind of envy may be called ghibtah.

This hadith teaches us to always desire the company of the people of the Qur’an. One should desire the good attributes and characteristics that benefit him in this life and the Afterlife. One must eager to have the Qur’an in his heart and applies it on the daily aspects of life.

The hadith also emphasizes the importance and merits of reciting the Qur’an during the day and night on a regular basis.
