Al-Fatihah: The Summary of the Qur’an

In this short talk, Sheikh Nouman Khan reflects on two verses from Surat Al-Fatihah (the 1st Chapter of the Qur’an) showing how these verses summarize the noble message of the Qur’an.

The Almighty Allah says:

It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path. (Al-Fatihah 1:5-6)

He begins his talk by mentioning that, while he was studying the knowledge of tafseer with a scholar, the scholar asked him after six months, give me the summary of the Qur’an in one sentence? He was amazed, only one sentence, then the scholar said, define two sentences?

He said, “how am I going to summarize the entire Qur’an in two sentences?” Then he remembered what he had said as follows:

1- Accept Allah as a master and accept yourself as a slave.

There are a lot of people who accept Allah as master, but do not accept themselves as slaves. Everyone must accept that, “you are slave then He is your master”.

2- the guidance is only beneficial to people who accept themselves as slaves.

It is to say that slavery and guidance are the summary of the Qur’an. After that, Sheikh Nouman goes on to differentiate between a free person and a slave?
